Hens only or should I get a drake?

Destroy the nest daily and matter of a factly grab them and remove from the nest. It's pretty easy being smarter than a duck. 👍😳

It’s more that I would have a harder time than usual as they so desperately want to be mothers, and a part of me would want to allow that. I know that the physical level of difficulty of removing them would be the same :)

They really can be! I've had some that would not budge even after I removed all eggs and destroyed their nests. Those hens I had to stick in a 12' x 12' pen until their broodiness subsided.

That was my experience with my pied hen last summer. She went broody with her first ever clutch (despite me removing her eggs and wrecking her nest) and only truly regained her sanity in October. It’s quite something to see them determinedly sitting on an empty and destroyed nest, refusing to budge!

Well getting them moving and not allowing the behaviour is a simple fix.

Huh? Just hormonal. It’s easily done.

I get what you are saying. I think my point is that I would have a hard time denying my girls motherhood if I had a drake, and I just don’t want to deal with duck math once ducklings hatch. It’s easier this way :) And yes, I completely understand that having a drake does not mean that there have to be ducklings.

That’s what I spent my summer doing (taking eggs, destroying nests, getting her out and moving and distracted). It still didn’t break her broody mindset though. I’m not complaining though. The complexity of the Muscovy mindset has grown on me:love

Okay I tried but continue on this year. Best wishes..
