Hens only or should I get a drake?

Back to the drake topic... love my boy Herman❣️
He always keeps a look out and keeps the girls together. He always waits for the stragglers to be sure they come up to the duck house together after free ranging all day.
As others have stated - good to have at least 4 ducks per drake. Only got a couple Saxony ducklings from last springs hatch and of course 1 turned out to be a drake (Hansel) so now I have father and son. Easy fix get more duck hens and I opted for a couple Pekins I picked up on Craigslist. Have Saxony 4-H breeding program with new bloodline that may yield a few more duck hens this spring. Fingers crossed.🙏
I’ve had a couple Pekin and KC drakes in the past and they were absolute MONSTERS! The Saxony drakes are more mellow but seemingly less fertile.

They are gorgeous! I have a Father an Son Runners and boy do I love my boys!

:goodpost:Drakes are much more alert to danger than ducks but like DuckyDonna said all they can do is warn the flock and sacrifice themselves. Our runner drake is looking around for danger most of the time when free ranging. The ducks just eat, drill, chase bugs and never look for danger.
Yes this. Same dynamic with my flock. My drake did attack a chicken who was laying in the duck nest, but she was an easy target
