the neck feathers (hackles) and feathers hanging down in front of the tail (saddle feathers), plus the overall coloring with the splashy, patchy red, plus the large, plump comb for the age. All rooster signs.

He's probably just being quiet to keep from getting his butt kicked by all the other males
