Hens or roosters?

I have 2 barred rock chickens, and I am not quite sure if they are laying hens or roosters. They are around 5 months old.

The other barred has same colors but the comb is much smaller so I'm confused here and they aren't making any morning calls.... what tells you it is a cockerel

His coloring...males appear lighter/more white in the barring
