Hens Sleeping

I have never seen my hens sleep. When they were chicks, I'd see them fall asleep all the time.

Now, I try sneaking up on them in the coop, at various times, and their eyes are always open.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Apart from a light snooze, my chickens only sleep at night and they are hard-wired to hear footsteps (or any noise for that matter) on a morning time as i go to the coop. As prey animals, their sense of hearing and sight is acute so its to be expected that they will always have their eyes open by the time you actually reach the coop.
