I don't know how it happened or how long it's been that way. She's been trying to go broody so I am handling her quite a bit and noticed it. Does it hurt her? She still eats, so that's not a problem, but I do wonder if it affects her at all.
 
It's hard to say without a picture, but if she's eating well then it may just look worse than it is. Is it actually split, or is the keratin just flaked/damaged? If it's the latter, then it's purely cosmetic and will wear off on it's own eventually (or you could buff it out with a dremmel and a grinding bit to make it smooth again).
