Apparently the ink can be harmful to some. Never had a problem myself, but they have food dye markers, so why not? We label eggs every day and again after boiling. Never had an egg last more than 30 days in the house. (Medical K9 rescue)Wow, I love that hawk prevention! Thanks for sharing!
I use permanent markers all the time. Each egg in a batch gets an X, an O, or /, so I won't mix them up as I stagger hatch.
