Thanks for all the info.
I'd give my own thread one thumb down and one thumb up if I had to rate it. I was disappointed with the vanilla scent I applied to my four hens, one pullet and one rooster. It only worked for a day at the most. These insects are so determined to get at their face, and the rooster is getting bothered the most from them. Don't know if it's because of his color. He's a Golden spangled Appenzeller Spitzhauben, mostly reddish with some dark feathers.
I have some Gordon's Permithrin 10% stock spray, but it didn't work well last year. I've got Frontline fipronil spray as we have a bad case of only ticks here, and it works good when the cats or dogs run into a mass of baby ticks. I tried it on the chickens feathers, but it didn't do anythinig. Reading on my Gordon's bottle of stock spray, it says for cattle to add an oil to it, and then it says to use this daily only them for face flies. But that's for cattle. I ended up using Vet-Kem Ovitrol spray for fleas, ticks and bot flies that I had on hand. It has methoprene 0.27% and pyrethrins 0.20%, but I watered it down to half product and half water just to be on the safe side as the label says it's for use on cats, dogs, and horses. It worked well, and so far after three days it still seems to be working, though the weather has cooled a bit.
The thumb up would be for the vanilla car fresheners hanging in the chicken house. I have two in their house that is about 6x4 foot with air vent flow. These work. Will have to check out the products you have each suggested as I'm trying not to harm them, but also keep these bloodsuckers away.
