What we are looking for is dual chickens. I want laying hens and a roo to protect the ladies.

Next year we are wanting to get some meat chickens.

If you do dual purpose than all the extra roos are "meat birds". lol. What is pretty to me may not be to you. I wanted a lot of variety in flock and egg color. I just started in March and I now have 17 breeds!

Couple of suggestions...ee - green eggs, friendly birds for me are buff orpingtons, wyandottes, cochins. I wanted a barred chicken so got a barred rock, got marans because I wanted the dark eggs, but they aren't especially friendly at least mine aren't. the sex links all lay well also.

we have been getting eggs from our neighbor for awhile. Then I'm asked why do you want chickens if you are getting you eggs from your neighbor? Because I want chickens.

I'm a millitary brat! (and proud of it) so we didn't have any animals around us except dogs and 1 cat while growing up. So now we have some land, not much but it will do. I do what a lot of variety it the flock I don't care what kind as long they can handle the hot and cold of Mo.

I want to thank everyone for their input. You don't know how much this means to me!

Ive got production reds, a barrd rock, a RIR , and two buttrcups laying, and guarded by a semi-shy buttrcup rooster and a huge partridge rock rooster. A re-formed metal tool shed for a coop with a cloth fenced 20x20 foot run. All happy, healthy, and eight eggs a day so far. Dying for more hens!!!

Nice Coop!

I love my Blue laced red Wyandottes, they are really nice and they are ( in my opinion) stunning!
