HERE is where we are going to talk about a sustainable meat bird flock

Hatching rates are going to vary. At least with $8.00 poults, you have 6 chicks shipped out. With 6 eggs... well, depends on if they are even all fertile

Anyone else thinking about getting some Muscovy ducks since that ban is supposed to go into effect at the end of the month. I have been thinking about ducks for a few months now and I think I may get some Muscovys just to beat the ban.

What is the ban on exactly??? I don't check the duck section. Just don't tell anyone what you have...

I understand and thats why I think I may just order poults. My husband said that he thought the eggs were too expensive, and your right about fertility, not to mention the probelms just with shipped eggs. Where are you getting your turkeys from this summer? I also have several wild flocks running around here and will make sure mine are penned up, same with the ducks. I don't want to be responsible for letting an invasive species loose.

Wifezilla, I agree, you shouldn't punish everyone because one person (or a few out of thousands) are irresponsible.

That sounds like a great plan. It really does. Then you take into consideration the extra enforcement required, court time/costs, and collecting fines from said idiot.... Regulating just sounds cheaper and easier. Note, I did not say better. I would like to see your plan work, I just can't imagine it actually working with the way things are right now. Budget cuts and full courts

Literally, less than an hour ago I received a PM from someone in IA (couple hours away) who has a hen setting 6 eggs right now. What am I to say?? OF COURSE I AM INTERESTED!!!! I'll take them!!!

I was thinking about how my parakeets were always banded. Enforcement is always an issue, but you have the same problem with a ban.

Alright. I have my Buckeyes on order, Red Bourbon Turkeys are in the works, now for the hat-trick... I need to find someone around S. MN who has some Jumbo Bobwhite Quail to sell. If I can find 20-25 of the bobs I will be all set for a renewable meat bird flock (ducks aren't my thing as far as food goes. Cute? sure but if you don't like the taste why bother??)

So MN, SD, WI, IA BYCer's. Who's got them????

Something tells me you haven't tried Muscovy? It is delicious and much different tasting than other DUCK you might eat at say a chinese restaurant. Not greasy at all, and enough meat to really count.

Edited spelling! LOL (Dang iPhone with it's small keys!)

OT, but it's been a crappy morning picking ANOTHER dumped cat off the road in front of our little farm (you'd think I had a sign out saying please dump your unwanted "pets" here) and it looks like she had kittens somewhere too....

Anyhow, I needed the laugh that the little keys on the iphone provided.

danielnv,

(still laughing) Could you expand a bit more for us? What is the time/age to mature? How big are they dressed?? Do they lay all year or seasonally like a turkey??? How much room do they need???? Any other questions I should be asking?????????

(still laughing

You should have put "duck" in bold so others who may have not seen the first version know what we are laughing about)

I honestly don't have the answers to those questions, CARS. I would love any info others can provide, for sure. I used to live near a restaurant in FL that served muscovy in a ton of different ways, all delicious. I only ordered Muscovy any time I went there.

I'm hoping to start a flock in a month or two, after I get moved.

(edited my silly post again).
