Was planning on getting ready for lockdown tomorrow, but being the newbie I am, I was reading about what I need. Didn't realize that Bantams, need to go on lockdown sooner after reading about lockdown on here. So, went to candle chicks tonight to check air cells. Well, one of the little eggs has its beak in the air cell. So, I held it to my ear and could hear a little tapping.

I'm so not ready for this. I was planning to get the heat lamp tomorrow and set up everything. Oh Lord, help me. My daughter is ecstatic running around the house screaming that she's going to be a mommy again and I'm a nervous wreck!

So, now we have even more of a staggered hatch, but my question...

after breaking through the air cell, how long does it typically take them to hatch out of their shell? Just asking since I need a little more time!

So you see an external pip? I think it different for every chick. I have had an external pip and nothing til the next day. One, I saw the external pip and left the room for about 15 minutes and had a chick when I returned. There are different opinions on how long to leave them in the incubator. You may can leave the chick in until you have everything for your brooder box.

No, not an external pip, just looks like the beak is at the edge of the air cell inside. Didn't realize it until I was getting ready to put those two on lockdown and saw it's beak. So, an internal one. I wouldn't have handled if I realized these hatch sooner. I hope it's okay that I handled it.

It should be fine. I have candled eggs right up to hatching if I had a question of viability with good outcome.

We have a baby! Lil chick hatched last night around 7. So adorable and my daughter is ecstatic!

Not for certain since I am new, but just from reading around on here. For example, https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/bantam-eggs-hatching-earlier.454877/ is one, but found numerous ones. However, another egg pipped and it isn't the other Bantam, but is another smaller egg. We have a big mixture of eggs that my daughter got from her class.

Very exciting! Did you manage to get your brooder ready?

I bought my first chicks and we had nothing at home ready lol. Nothing like being under the gun, right?

Hoping to see more pics! :pop

Yes, yesterday morning. Kept lil chick in the incubator for a little over 12 hours since eggs were starting to get knocked all once the place. Kind of on a whim since we are just using a plastic tote now and might need to expand. Got the lamp and a makeshift brooding area, feed, water (messy little thing...LOL).

The baby we have is extremely attached to my daughter. Now to work on trying to change the ordinance in our town.
