Howdy. I’m Mike. I found this site out of desperation! I sent my husband to TSC for dog food, and now I have a dozen chicks in my living room!
needless to say, I am NOT prepared.
We’re still in our first year in our home, and we’ve just started the yard maintenance. So, my first thought was to build a coop and enclose our decorative pond inside the run. Well, once I got the area around the pond cleaned up, drained and cleaned, and refilled with a new pump... he decided that we’re going to use it as part of the landscaping now.
So now I’m onto the other side of the yard. The new plan is to convert our 10x18 tool shed! I’ve been searching all the forums and getting ideas. I need to work fast, but hopefully I’ll remember to take pictures of the process to post when it’s done.
since I’m going all in, and I’ll have 10x12 interior with a 20x30 outside enclosure, would it be crazy to add 12 more birds right from the start?

Hello, Mike, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

I strongly suggest you proceed with the full shed to coop conversion (you can search the coop articles for 'shed to coop conversion' and see what pops up) with a big run but hold off on getting another 12 chicks for 3 reasons.

One, you need to see how things go with your current flock and learn the ropes.

Two, if you wait until next year to get chicks you may end up with a broody out of your bunch you can just give hatching eggs to and let her do all the work.

Three, having new pullets each winter will help keep up with eggs during the time when the hens are taking a break and molting.
