Here's My Dilemma

I have one REALLY dominant white banty frizzle roo man!!!! He totally runs the show and even has pecked and chased my cockapoo dog into submission when she's on his turf along with my four year old son! Anywho...he is 6 mths. old and is VERY hormonal and egotistical...not a good combo! I have two 10 weeks old(now)...they've been in with him since they were 6 weeks old(poor things)....they are giant cochin girls...very very sweet and still wondering what his deal is!(lol) Anyway, he was beating them up pulling out feathers pretty good for a few weeks and lately they have all seemed to calm down alot. He still tries to wrestle them and hump them but they are not even close to mature yet. However, they are bigger than him in size and they have now totally started to bond with him b/c when I let them out they don't run and fly away from him anymore...they are sticking together in a flock. When I let him out(he's my only roo(i have four) that I have to do this with)...I wait for the first few minutes and see if he's going to try to bully anyone around and if so I run right up to him and give him a little boot in the butt and then he'll run off and behave himself for the rest of the day but sometimes he just needs a reminder that when Mommy's around he's not the bossman! Funny little guy! I love him and his big ego! Blessings, Keri

can you try it again and intervene in case it gets out of hand? It would be a shame to eat him (if you dont want to) based on his first "meeting" with her. Is their any particular hens he "likes" that he looks at through the fence? maybe put her with him and see what happens? step in real quick and rescue her if he gets "mean" but just to see?

Thanks Kerri........he was booted out of the house bc he just about blinded our cat. She was put down a few weeks ago at a ripe old age for other health reasons. But he is kind of scary. He's the only roo I ever had and I really like him and want him to have fullness of life..........but not at the expense of some innocent little hens. He even rules our 80 lb. dog and mini poodle when he's inside. That's why he has his own tractor. Kind of lucky when you think of where MOST roo's end up!!!

I would never eat him. The other day he was eating corn down by our deer feeders and he chased a deer who landed down on her side and up again trying to escape him. I have heard banty roosters and the meanest. The worst case scenario is that he is sentenced to his 4x8 tractor and loses free ranging.

i'm in the same situation with a banty polish that is nearly 9 months now and i've been trying to get him used to my pullets. he has been in the house since i hatched him. unfortunately he has been attacking my salmon fav i wanted to pair with him since she is now a house pet too. i'm afraid i babied him for too long since he has an unhealthy habit of 'jumping' my arm.

i have a 3'x8' pen in my basement for him, but i want to get him introduced to others so this doesn't happen anymore. i'm planning on putting her large dog crate beside his pen and hope he will get used to her company eventually to get them together.

he seemed to not fight my banty cochin but i figured they couldn't tell who was supposed to be submissive. he tried to fight my caged frizzled silkie cross and got a little bloody over it. (he was the one that was loose while the caged one didn't have a scratch!)

i may just try putting him in with all my girls and the banty cochin to see if they can bring him down to earth some.

Wonder what would happen if I put him in the Big House with 52 full size hens?

Roos will put hens in their place but this guy sounds like a little monster. He'd lose his head around here. I've had dozens of nice banty roos with no agression whatsoever including some raised as pets. My best rooster so far was a little japanese bantam who took great care of the hens and died getting them to the coop when a dog attacked. He was raised inside with only 1 other chick for months. The only son I hatched from him now runs the flock that he saved, another bantam EE roo that is part d'uccle runs another little flock that ranges with the standards, and then I have a few serama roos with sebright hens and one bantam EE hen with a bad leg in a little coop. The seramas can be a bit pushy and occasionally have spats with each other but otherwise all my roos are completely peaceful. The only exception met his fate the day we butchered the quail. With all the nice roos out there I'd get rid of anything that isn't great with the hens and people. If you really want to keep him your best bet is probably to try to put him with lots of standard hens so he'll likely spread out his attentions and agression on them hopefully keeping any single chicken from getting injured. If that doesn't work you'll have to keep him by himself for the rest of his life. Chickens really don't do well alone and it's not a good life for a chicken.

If you want a house chicken get a pair of nice bantams. I had a trio of japanese bantams in the house all last winter. They had a 3'x6'x5h pen and wandered about the house in chicken diapers. Did just fine including around the dogs and cats and the roo was great with his 2 hens. The roo I mentioned earlier and a hen also did great in the house and he would occasionally sit on my 80lb dog. I love my japanese bantam roos. Seramas and dutch bantams are also good choices for house chickens due to their small size and calmer attitudes.

This lil guy is a spoiled banty cochin. Maybe a few hours in the big house would give him an attitude adjustment. I'd have to be on patrol though. Wouldn't want a homicide!!!
