Heritage Delawares @ 15 Weeks Old (PICS)

My suggestion, if anyone is the least bit serious about breeding, is to get a copy of the Standard of Perfection, or at least borrow someone's copy for a while or take it out of the library and photocopy the relevant passages and pictures for your breed. That way, you have an objective reference, and you know exactly what to look for. The pictures alone are priceless in terms of clearing away all nagging doubts or illusions. I like to put a side shot of my birds up against the standard photo to see where they lack, where they need to be improved. It really does help.

Thanks so much for the warm welcome. Really, I haven't been back on in a while, but hope to soon have a setup for chickens. How do I find breeders, or even hobbyists, who have chicks or chickens for sale in the winter? We are willing to make a long drive if we can get enough birds. Thanks for the info and suggestions, will get the SoP ASAP

What other "Heritage Birds" would some of you recommend, that would get along well with Delawares?

Yes, the illustrations. I have them scanned into the computer so that I can put a side shot of my birds right beside the illustration. If you want to see an example of this technique, check out Skytop Bantams' website here:

(They've got pics of their birds online and also the illustrations so that you can put the picture right beside their birds. Pretty impressive).

Edited to add: Go to the bottom of that page and click on the red text to get to the comparison screen.

It's not working, but I'll check back later. Thanks! I sort of thought the illustrations were useless, but I think I get what you are saying about putting a picture of your bird up against it.

Here's an example using one of my birds. He still has some changing to do since he's only 6 months of age, and his position in the photo is not perfect, but you can kind of see how he stacks up against the illustration (so far) using this technique:

Thanks very much. I don't say he's perfect or anything. As a matter of fact, I can see exactly where he needs to be improved

. My birds are a work in progress, as I've said before. But I'm fairly pleased with where they are right now. Onward and upward!
