Heritage & Exhibition Turkey Thread

Hey folks! I ust joined yesterday and can't figure out how to start a new thread. I'll keep looking but until then, could you help me with this issue? I have a small back yard 60' x 40' with a 6 foot wooden fence around the whole thing. I have two bantam chickens and just purchased a Standard Bronze poult. I have a small coop which the chickens roost in at night but have free range of the back yard all day. They have yet to fly away and have had them two years. When my turkey is old enough to roam all over, will I need a coop for him/her and will he/she fly away? If so, will clipping the wings be enough and have you got some plans for a "double" coop for chickens and turkeys? Thanks very much.

Maybe Sam will give you his opinion. They look nice, but finding a good Royal Palm is rare. I would suggest entering them in a show and talk to the judge afterwards. Ask the judge to be honest and accept his advise. It is understandable about her condition as you state 100% fertility. My black hen "escapes" daily to outside the turkey pasture and grazes. My hen's condidition is fairly good, as she gets away from the tom. Mine were as nice as yours. Took Best of Variety several times. Even at Shawnee this past December. Yet, Terry Britt pointed out mine did not have two bands across the tail. Few have the two bands.

So take them to an APA sanctioned show and get a judge's opinion. Good luck!

In the SOP, the picture does indeed have the second band, however in the description it says "Pure white with each feather having a broad band of metallic black about1 1/2 inches in width terminating in pure white at the end of tail." And nothing about the second band...? The description makes it sound like a singular band on the tail feathers. How confusing! Maybe someone will explain it on here......

When I recall something from a picture, I am constantly reminded that the picture is an artists rendition of the bird. Technically speaking, you would go by the written version. But I don't know what a judge would say about that.

I still love the picture. That bird is the only turkey to win best of show in 54 year history. Do you have one better?
