Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Mites or lice are just part of poultry. Just treat him. I prefer eprinex (1 cc dose for large fowl). But there are a ton of different ways to treat, and an entire forum dedicated to health issues. But sending a bird back just for a few bugs seems overkill (although I wouldn't condone someone sending birds with bugs).

Had a friend of a friend contact me today, they're looking for some good, real, standard bred Golden Laced Wyandottes. Does anyone have a lead for them?
Agree with the above. I get mites in my flock about once a year. I blame all the wild birds, and my chicken free range so probably not avoidable.

I hope to always catch them early but sometimes they spread fast & I don't. It is my least favorite thing about keeping poultry. I prefer the eprinex too but in a hurry, I will use the Frontline spray (the one for kittens in a spray bottle) -- will spray under wing & below vent - one spritz.

Yes, you needtot see his birds from the side. He has awesome Rocks.

That's why I wanted to see him!

It's like looking at a beautiful antique car that someone has worked hard to restore and that you just don't get to see on the roads anymore....pure, total desire to see it in all its glory. Makes ya want to reach out and touch it, it's so gorgeous!

I have a WR(XW line) cockerel I'm growing out here too. Never have been fond of the "plain vanilla" colored birds I always was drawn to(if white) the columbian or del patterned ones. But now that I have this guy he has really grown on me and everyday I'm astonished even more at what he's become and gonna be as I am feeding him. I have raised plenty of different type/kind/patterns over my span of rearing poultry and I tell you he is sight to behold. Maybe because he is just so different, maybe he is just that awesome. I think he would be a good representative of the variety, someday I may have to show him and see. I can see why Fred has such a liking for these particularly. I have a Rock with a tail finally LOL

Jeff

I reference the"plain vanilla kind" as the hundreds of thousand of white broilers I had and hand at rearing for decades while growing up myself(could say I had seen plenty of "white" chickens) probly huh?LOL

Two directions I would try

#1 http://www.foleyswaterfowl.com/forsale.htm
he does not advertise golden laced but he might know

#2 Bob Blosl had me e-mail poultry judges and I found my buff brahma that way

I'll pass those along. It seems to be a variety that has fallen out of favor. Too many jumping on the latest trends and the old varieties and breeds fall by the wayside.

That's what everyone says when I rave about WRs...they don't like "plain" white birds. There is nothing plain about a WR, in my eyes. They have to be the most regal chicken I've ever seen! The feather quality is so far above any other breed I've ever known, the way they walk, carry their heads, their whole demeanor speaks of calm, confident royalty. And I've only ever had hatchery genetics until now...I can only guess what it's like to see a male WR from heritage lines close up in real life. I currently have two pullets from Kathyinmo and they are so singular and distinct in their carriage...it's like watching a clipper ship moving across the yard in full sail.

Heads and tails above other breeds, IMO, for sheer size, density of muscles, bone mass, proud bearing, calm demeanor, feather quality and presence. It's just that presence that grabs me. Al showed me a pic once of a cock he used to have and I saved that pic, bring it up to look at every now and again because I've never seen a rooster like that in real life in all my days. Here's the pic....makes all the other roosters I've ever owned look like dog meat, truly. Al said his tail wasn't quite right but he still looks like a dream to me!

Hi out there on BYC..
I am NEW but I decided to do chickens some time ago and with my own research had decided to peruse the Dominique as the one I wanted to do. Also I just recently found this thread and it really helped me out to stay with this thought of doing chickens!! the other one I think would be the RIR. but one at a time for now.

My main purpose for raising chickens will be for eggs and meat for the family ( 5 of us), but to be able to continue a breed or standard as you all talk about on this thread, to stick with the " heritage" of a breed is the way I would like to do it.

I have a good size garden and I use my own seeds and only buy heirloom seeds from reputable people. So I thought why do different when it comes to chickens! I am in Ohio ( west central ) so would there be anyone close that does either breed or someone that would know where I could find them.

I have been reading this thread from the beginning and was sorry to hear of the passing of Bob back in Oct. but I am VERY encouraged by the amount of information and expertize that is on this thread and the whole BYC site.

I would also love to find a mentor for this project like I said I am new to chickens but I have been around dogs all my life and have done a fair share of rescue work with the ACD breed so I get what it would take to do this and I am excited to give it-a-go!

Last thought is the plan would be to "free range" or paddock, I have 4+ acre and no one to "piss-off"

with noise or wandering birds. With 3 kids and two dogs and thank God still one wife
