Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Happy thanksgiving I have downloaded the Free ebooks when recommended mostly want the SOP at the current time for the information applicable to all breeds.

I continue to be fascinated by the possibility, originally laid out by Oscar Smart, that trap nesting may still be a possibility for the backyarder, even in this busy modern day. To that end I dug around on the Net and found this interesting little tome from 1901. The author has a lot of interesting things to say about both trap nesting and observation methods for discerning superior layers ...and creating a superior laying strain. Yet, his sharp focus is on the trap nest itself, which makes this book more interesting than diverting. I just wish there were detailed illustrations to complement the instructions for construction, as I am a very visual learner. However I will run them by my woodworker Hubby Bob and see what he can make from them. Below is one interesting excerpt. I found it both factually and historically plausible.

THE ORIGIN OF THE BROWN EGG FAD.
(Written for the Eastern Poultryman.)
While the white shelled egg is still preferred in some sections the brown
shelled egg is ultra-fashionable in New England and throughout the
greater part of the country.( sic)
I grew up on brown eggs-- buying white at the grocery is still illicits an odd feeling when I pick up the carton . . . I will buy only brown if I have a choice. From my own hens, I rather enjoyed finding the one cream egg . . . . a hen from my SSH rooster.

Just wanted to wish everyone in this thread a happy thanksgiving! Hope it's a day filled with fun, family and hopefully a tasty heritage turkey! LOL
I have wondered if any one on this thread raised heritage turkeys? FInding good info on BYC is rather difficult when it comes to selection and breeding . . . . I expect the mods will stop this discussion. If anyone is willling to help just PM me and perhaps a new thread can be started . . . .

Is the marans in the newest SOP available?? I mean in the bound pages, not an insert that I am likely to lose??

No, it is not in yet. It will be in the next edition. There will be illustrations of the Marans in the next edition as well as the description. Black Copper and possibly Wheaten.
