Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I honestly don't have any real opinion of the birds in question because I know nothing about the breed and care less. However, having yet to attend my first poultry show, I'm learning a bunch.

For example, most of my experience with exhibiting animals has been with dogs and I learned to schmooze with the best of 'em and I was quite successful for a number of years...

Another point that I find striking...If an AKC or UKC judge came onto a public forum and voiced an opinion about anyone's dogs, good or bad, their next assignment would be parking cars at the events and or cleaning out 'pit stop' areas.
This is certainly not aimed at anyone in particular because I've seen what I would consider equally egregious statements by several APA judges on this board so I'm left to assume that unlike other exhibition venues, the judges can get down and dirty with everyone else.

If I were a judge, I would certainly check out this wonderful board but the only sign of me would show up as 'guest'....but that's just me.

you hit the nail square on the head in many of your statements there Ron and I'd suggest you practice a little of your preaching too and a lot more learning then. This is not dogs, horses or anything with hair or not hair.(no comparing "nothing") It is a poultry forum and the judges are in the know and they are secure(very secure) in their positions and where they stand on their statements, otherwise I'm sure they would hold there tongue(WAY more) than they already do, LOL As I said its a cruel world out there in Poultryville they are just giving heads up mostly, go on a do as you please though and it will all come out in the wash.

You need to go back about 1900 pages read all of them and then come say blatant remarks as such I bet you'll have a different tune about the judges on this thread. and probly will not like me much better by then either so what I'm here to learn not for the "attaboys" or to show off my "smarts" LOL

and yes I don't agree with them all the time in fact have gotten upset myself at one or two of'em a few times but in general the truth does hurt esp. when you think you've got it all figured out LOL

I'm not apologizing for posting what I did earlier I don't feel as so I should. If it was a personal bird and it got someones goat as bad as it seems then I may do so or even delete it, but its a picture of someone else's(a mockery of the poultry breeding industry) inferior stock and I said what I thought and I stay there too, my opinion.(entitled)

The few judges that still come to BYC help a lot of people out. It's no wonder so many good breeders and so on don't come here now. How is a person supposed to know things unless they're told? Otherwise it's the blind leading the blind. I've had mine critiqued and didn't always like what I heard, but when I post and ask opinions, that's what I want. Not sugar coated "He's beautiful!" blah blah. Guess we're all different. This kind of drama is why I don't come to BYC much any more.

Yes, you are entitled to your opinion....so am I.

EDIT: I'm not talking about just this thread...I visit several others.

Old Mastiff breeder here. .... In the US judges rarely show. If they do, they use a handler, who then cannot show anything to that judge/owner . Different ball game in the UK, where the judges show one weekend, and exhibit the next. There are also written critiques in the UK for nearly every show. Some aren't worth much, such as, "Fido was not his usual jolly self today", but a few are. This is a learning thread. We need all the experienced judges and breeders we can get.

Walt never gets "down and dirty", but if you ask for his opinion, you will get it, not some sugar coated answer.Thank heavens !
LOL yes thanks Vickie you posted while I was typing out mine and I agree Walt will tell just like the cow eats the cabbage for sure and I like that, and he has made me back up a time or three and regroup for a while.

Again...everyone should be entitled to their opinions.

Exactly (galanie)and we even have butted heads a little in the past too LOL but in the end we all are headed (or trying to) in the same direction and that guidance those judges give helps keep the wheels on track huh may make it a bumpier ride for a spell but it smooths out sooner enough.

I agree that everyone should be entitled to their opinions, even judges. Back in the good ole days of judges such as Alva Rosenberg, Annie Clark, etc. you could ask for , and get a real opinion. Nowadays it is difficult unless you happen to know a judge well, to get anything but positives. The AKC rep. might get a complaint from someone who feels that they are being criticized instead of their dog.

Hopefully we will not run into this in poultry. One caveat...Once you have gotten an opinion; always consider the source !

APA judges are among the most valuable contributors to this thread. Many of us are learning to develop an eye for a well-bred chicken that conforms to APA Standard. I will take Walt's opinion on a chicken over just about anyone else's. Without the contribution of people like Walt this thread would be nothing but BS, like most of the threads on BYC.
