Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

We've had our power flicker three times and I really hope it doesn't go out. We used to never have power outages but in the last three years we've been having them more often

. One time the lightning hit the power line pole and it caused us and only us to lose power

. Took them all night before they got out to our house.
Global Warming my..............foot!

Fortunately my hens are laying like B-52's but several 9 and 10 month old pullets are trying to go broody on me...Penguin on the brain?

Pastured Poultry.

That's what I call it, but today there is not much activity out on the ole range. 9 inches of snow fell last night, a rare event for coastal Virginia. These are Southern Chickens who don't deal well with snow, like their keeper! So, I cut them slack today and put the food and water inside the coop. A stay at home day, today for all concerned.

Quote: THe warming causes more extreme weather . . . . . .more over 100 days here, actuall had 9 days straight over 90 last summer, and now this super cold . 20 was the normal here, with 10-15 occasionally. Every day I use the blow drier to get the outside water running . . . . is it Mar 30th yet??

Are these the BA or NN laying up a storm or both??

I'm sorry I brought up Global Warming...I don't buy it. My last word on the subject...when it started getting cold, the 'believers changed their tune and called it 'Global Change'...That's right, I'm an Extremist..Right-wing Republican...End of Discussion..

Both breeds are pouring them out...They have always been excellent winter layers but this is STRANGE...

No power here still. I have all the incubators covered with blankets. 2 degrees outside and 4" of snow.
Nothing to do but hope for the best.

If you have any hand warmers or if you heat by fire you could likely get them through this. Hand turning would be required too.

When I've lost power, sometimes for a couple of days (before I moved here) we would run our generator for a few hours at a time for the freezer and to be able to cook. I would plug in my incubators too and then wrap them up in blankets overnight with a few hand warmers inside for a little extra insurance. Some of the chicks did hatch. I don't remember right now what the percentages were but it wasn't a total loss and they actually did pretty well.

What ever you want to call it, I just know how I deal with things here on the farm have changed. lol I don't do change-- makes me have to think harder. Rather think about things that interest me-- like CHICKENS!!

BUt on a serious note-- I feel for the polar bears as the artic ice pack is shrinking very fast. And the average yearly temps are increasing. Call it what you will, the effect is the same. On the local news yesterday there is talk of reducing or stopping development along the shorefront of Boston because of the rising seas . . . .
