Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Chicks, we got chicks!

So.. I am reading on my computer and I hear baby birds. Thinking robins outside the window. Nope, too close for that.
But we haven't even got to lockdown yet. aren't due till at least tomorrow. The turner is still running.Nuts, I got chicks hatching like crazy in the one Brinsea Mini Advance. One is out and several are pipping. Interesting, Last season I filled both sides of the water wells at lockdown. This year, I read where someone had easier hatches by just not doing that. Leaving only one side full. So this year I didn't fill the other side and the chicks are hatching much easier and sooner. How about that? These chicks that are hatching today are the outcross chicks. My, the one already out is huge! That's exciting!
Best,
Karen
These chicks are also not as soppy wet as the chicks last season.

Congratulations!

I had that happen this year--All of them hatched in the Brinsea Octagon--tilting away. They were very healthy boogers too.

Delawares and SG Dorkings.

Thanks lacey Blues and ronotti !,
I'm excited. Been a long wait. They will brood on the front porch till they can go outside.
Best,
Karen

Karen what is your humidity %? I am wondering as I am still new to hatching. I did better my last two hatches at 70%.
Cheryl

I missed lockdown--Humidity was set at 35% but when I checked the Brinsea was at 60%--The hatching chicks add moisture. The trick is to maintain temperatures as close to 99.5 to 99.9 as possible. The Brinsea does a very good job of that. I do not know if anyone pays attention when I say it, but sticky chicks are caused by temperature being off and not allowing the yolk to absorb.
Congrats Karen and Lacy, Ron on your hatches!

I pay attention Ron. I've been fiddling with my incubator and doing what I can to maintain temps. This crazy thing is going to give me an ulcer! I need a new one but have to wait for now. For some reason, it started working 3 days ago. It's maintaining 99-100 degrees without any additional heat source. I found out when checking the temps and it was up to 107! I have no idea how long it was that hot; I check at least every hour and double check before bed, so not too long. I removed the additional heat source and it dropped down and has stayed in the desired range. We'll see how long it lasts.

Good job!

It can be a lot of work keeping them stable sometimes.

I got seriously contradicted on another thread when I said this. Thank you.
