Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

You might ask questions on how to MAINTAIN as this is as hard as improving on faults. Perhaps ask what preventative or treatments or methods he uses to keep the flock healthy: which wormers if any, or homeopathic treatments for internal or external parasites. And consider using the same methods.

Perhaps ask how to set up breeding pens with the birds you get from him: which cckl to which pullet.

Bring a way to ID each bird, perhaps a different colored leg band for each so you know which bird he is talking about; in my sheep after 20 year, I had many look alikes and needed ear tag numbers to know which was mother and which was daughter or neice.

Write everything down. Or record it.
Super advice, Arielle!
Esp. the part about writing or recording all. This is where a spouse is such a great partner.
Writing and recording the conversation.
Best,
Karen

One of the things I learned while studying horse breeding was that I didn't understand everything at once. TOok years. I would re-read info years later and a light bulb would go on.

Just saying I learned more by having those notes still available to read all those years later combined with some experience under my belt to see the deeper meaning of the information.

In addition, ask questions about nutrition:
What regimen does Stukel follow for conditioning birds for breeding?
What supplements does he offer in winter as opposed to what is available in spring and summer?

Questions about housing:
Recommended pen size for each pair? What has he found to be the most satisfactory?
Wire floor, sand, hay or deep litter?

Hatching eggs.. proliferation:
What time frame for hatching eggs? Does he recommend beginning the hatching process in January - May or a different time-frame?
Since he hatches 40-50 each year, what numbers would he recommend for the number of pairs you will have? (That depends on your space available and finances too).

What were his primary goals for adding the outside WR hens 15 years ago?
Besides maintaining, would he offer suggestions for breeding goals to assist you in maintaining and improving the line. ..perhaps 2 or 3?

Thanks Arielle and Nankat. I had thought of some of those, but there are many I hadn't.

@colburg-- definitely ask about the pairing as rotational breeding is what allowed him to keep his line going without reaching to more outside stock in recent years. You can follow this too. THere are a number of breeders that post here that follow that method.

The link should be Blue if correct.
