Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I heard this is the place to go to find out about where to get heritage breeds. I am new to chickens this year. I got 3 breeds of hatchery birds this year, and I like all of them, but especially the New Hampshires. I am hoping I might be able to get some non-hatchery New Hampshires from a breeder next spring. I do not plan to show, but I may start breeding and raising my own birds to some extent, and I would like a healthy, good line of New Hampshires. The hatchery birds have been good so far, but from what I hear there is a differences between those and true heritage lines.

I am in SW Colorado, where mail service typically takes 3 days from the midwest. I haven't found any New Hampshire breeders nearby. I have never incubated, and I would prefer to get a few chicks to start. Does anyone have any suggestions?

There are several people on here that have nice NH. Cpartist, JWhip, Zanna, Walt, Matt1616 and more.

You are right concerning hatchery NHs. Few even resemble the breed. Mostly, they appear to be mixed red layers.

Karen, congrats on your new badge! I'm sorry that I never was able to find the owners of those Sussex. I will try again, next time that I go to a show.
Awh, shucks, thank you! Well life goes on, maybe you will see them again sometime.
Thanks for trying!
Best Regards,
Karen

Thanks, gjensen.
Should I try contacting these folks directly, or just wait to see if they reply to my inquiry?

I agree with George. get proactive. is not to late to maybe find a breeder who is still downsizing for overwintering.
Maybe they have last season's breeders they would be willing to sell. Or an older cock. All you need to get started
is some older breeder birds with a couple of seasons left in them. Remember you are seeking a top breeder with
vintage line bred strain winning in quality competition over multiple generations.
Best,
Karen

Buzzards ( I guess they qual as Heritage Large Fowl
wink.png
)

Every year the buzzard migration to Buzzard's Roost in OH passes over the top of our house.
Right around this 2nd weekend in Oct. Life was busy this weekend and I only caught the tail end of the migration about 2 hours ago. It's really magnificent! Hundreds of buzzards wheeling and soaring. This time about 40 circled over our block in an updraft waiting for the laggers to catch up. Then they were away to their winter haunt. I love watching them. Only time I think I have ever seen a buzzard soar in a straight line. They are too far up to hear if they are calling to each other. I wonder if they do? From watching them, their flight patterns seem to be the encouraging part. Wheeling and waiting for others to catch up. They don't soar in a tight group. The flight path is hundreds of yards wide. Stretching from ridge to ridge and over the horizon.
Awh, nature, gotta love it.
