Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I'm basically a lurker here, and I have to say that I'm somewhat surprised the Jersey Giant isn't mentioned more often as a true dual-purpose breed. More than likely, that's because they do take a good amount of time to grow out. However, even though they take so long to reach full maturity, surprisingly, they start laying much sooner than one might think; my line typically begins lay at about 28 weeks. And, they are good layers of XL to Jumbo sized eggs. The spent layers make nice eating. Very full & wide in the breast; lots of meat, and the males have massive legs. I do not caponize, but my Giant mentor does, and folks often mistake a roasted Giant on her table for a turkey. Alright, that may have sounded like a commercial; sorry about that! Love my Giants.
I'm glad that you have come out of the wood work and to share the details of your Jersey Giants. THis is a very differnt picture than the one I painted from scanty info. I rather think I would like this bird based on your commercial. ( laughing)

Fred, are you going to Columbus on the 9th? I would love to have some of those culls (ora decent trio if you could spare one

) of those Barred Rocks. My dad, who is 91, mentioned that "Dominickers" are his favorite and he wishes (runs in the family) I had some. He won't know the difference, and I will get some nice birds. There's not much that I can do for him at this stage of his life. If not, can you point me toward someone who has good ones that I might could get to meet me there?

I had originally planned to go to Lucasville or Columbus but life gets in the way.

At this point, I do not personally know anyone going with Rocks. Surely, there will be. Prior arrangements is very helpful in arranging for buying of culls or better at a show. There'll be a lot of selling at the early part of the gathering, no doubt they'll go fast.

I just can't be of much help to you though. Maybe others are much better informed.

At the BOston show the exhibitors are on a list with contact info-- if this show does that perhaps someone has an old list? OR contact the show secretary-- the secretaries know everyone.

Yellow House Farm, I do plan on going to the Boston show but most likely only one day.

I had purchased a pair of SC bantam RIR at the Little Rhody spring show and just love them, they are just such a cute couple. :)

So I was really hoping to add a couple more quality birds from someone local but no luck at the fall show :/

I'll be attending the OH Nationals. I'm a few hours from Fred; if he has anything up his way, I'd be happy to pick them up & meet you there with the birds.

You sound like me - rarely does anyone think of Javas either. Love my Javas. Great eggs, great meat. Hubby still gets excited to see how big the legs are on them when we eat them - so much bigger than anything bought at the store.

I've got a juvenile pair. They'd be about perfect for that person. 7 weeks old. The cost of shipping is just so brutal. This may work. Is the age too young? Just let me know.
