Lots of people have asked about the tarps I'm using;. With yet another cold snap coming, here's what I've done.Ready for February now !


Go to eBay and go to ADVANCED search, to the right of Search..Scroll down the page to sellers. Tarpstogo should show up. If not, you can go direct to their website TARPAFLEX.COM. Only get the ones with the white nylon mesh. They last for years. You can join tarps by using HEAVY duty Scotch brand clear packing tape too. I just have the gate to the main run to cover today. This stuff is great as you can cut it, and use the packing tape to attach it to metal posts, and gates.We used heavy zip ties to attach the tarps to the chain link. I've got a photo ....






All buttoned up. Just one panel to go ! This is facing North.

If you'll label your tarps when you take them down, you'll save yourself a hassle next year ! Got a good stash of pumpkins too.

Here are the ones I'm using on my breeding pens... perfectly clear vinyl except when the frost is heavy.
I use MyTarp.com
These are attached with Velcro and are rolled up on days when it's above 30 or so, and then totally removed in the winter.

THank you for the specifics (websites) to find the supplies like clear tarps-- might make good green house material too!!

Tough weather moving in here, with light snow then -5 for a few nights and not over 32 for hte next 9 days. Sure hope the forecasters are wrong, but glad to have hot water piped to an outside faucet.

Lowe's sells greenhouses made from this material.This is tough stuff, which lasts for years.

I discovered that it was much cheaper to buy it by the foot... That's why I ordered it on line. I could cut it to fit that way. Yes, it's great for windows. .. That's basically what my breeding pens are. All the sides are hardware cloth with vinyl over the top and you can roll up the vinyl or remove it easily.

Do you think the material would work well as a "window" in a coop if it was supported with rat wire to keep a predator out but let light in??

That's why we like to use the white "plastic" corrugated roofing panels for the coops and the inside of the coops are white also. keeps the coops brighter on cloudy days.

I am definitely going to look into this clear greenhouse material for making tarps for winter next year. I use heavy mil "clear" plastic for the sides of the runs but the regular tarp that I put on top of the runs does make it a bit darker in the runs than I would like.

You will love this reinforced stuff. You might also try using thick bubble wrap under those roofing panels. Lots of orchid growers do. The bubble wrap insulates well, and can be sealed with packing tape.

As we discuss clear poly options for housing, could I inject an other topic.

When I was looking thru the NEPC 2014 SHow listing and having an interest in turkeys, I noticed that turkeys are listed as LF.

We don't discuss turkeys on this thread and I have often wondered why not? Perhaps turkeys are not large fowl, or that Bob hadnot meant to extend the LF title of this thread to include turkeys at the on set rather to start with LF chickens to get the thread rolling . . . .

It leads me to wonder who has turkeys . . .?

How high of winds do you typically get and how strong is the packing tape bond? I know packing tape really loves sticking to some materials. I've wanted to do something like this on my runs, in part to act as a wind break, but am concerned that our winds would just shred it. I'm high desert, we get winds fall/winter/spring that can pick up and flip heavy metal/glass patio furniture, push wheel barrows across the property, etc.

I live on the North side of a hill. We have very strong winds.The Scotch brand Heavy duty packing tape sticks !
