Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Been pretty busy lately. Got some pics.

As of right now I have 47 La Flèche and 36 Buckeyes in my spare bedroom. With even more Buckeyes out in the garage. Going to hatch 2 more batches of La Flèche then wait til March to do anymore.

That would be Monte Bowen, which was who Saladin mentioned as having good Black Javas in recent shows. I quoted Saladin in my post, and the Saladin quote was edited out in yours. Perhaps you didn't see the comment I was responding to.

Monte has some great Javas but I've only seen pictures.

Lots of people have asked about the tarps I'm using;. With yet another cold snap coming, here's what I've done.Ready for February now !

Go to eBay and go to ADVANCED search, to the right of Search..Scroll down the page to sellers. Tarpstogo should show up. If not, you can go direct to their website TARPAFLEX.COM. Only get the ones with the white nylon mesh. They last for years. You can join tarps by using HEAVY duty Scotch brand clear packing tape too. I just have the gate to the main run to cover today. This stuff is great as you can cut it, and use the packing tape to attach it to metal posts, and gates. We used heavy zip ties to attach the tarps to the chain link. I've got a photo ....

All buttoned up. Just one panel to go ! This is facing North.

If you'll label your tarps when you take them down, you'll save yourself a hassle next year ! Got a good stash of pumpkins too.

Vickie, when you use zip ties are they going through grommets in the tarp? If not, how do you attach the zip tie to the tarp? Make holes and reinforce them with something? (Am asking because I have a very thick billboard tarp that has no grommets, and I'm not sure I can actually get a grommet through this material with the rudimentary equipment I have available. If there were some other way of attaching zip ties or rope that would hold in strong winds I would be thrilled to learn it. It's going over a hoop coop.)

Put a piece of the tape on both sides of the tarp, and punch a small hole, if you have no grommets. Mine come with grommets. The tape sticks to my metal posts holding up the chain link, and to the tarps, really well.

I use Gorilla tape or duct tape to make those reinforced strips in which to punch grommets. Both sides of the plastic and even a couple of extra layers on corners and stress points.

My tarp doesn't have grommets because I had to cut it to the size I needed. It is for shade and wind protection so it is up all year. I have yet to find a tape that will hold up to Arizona summers. Gorilla tape lasts a little longer than duct tape here, but the heat unsticks or disintegrates both of them in a short time. Haven't tried the packing tape yet. Maybe if it's just reinforcing holes it won't matter if it comes unglued or transforms into a zillion tiny bits. All it has to do is last as long as the tarp. Regular heavy duty tarps last about 4 months max. Hope to get a few years out of the billboard tarp if I can get it attached.

I have about two months to figure out how to attach it before the current tarp completely disintegrates. Wish me luck.

Firring strips(sp?) can really help...I've got them on two sides of my tarp on both sides of the coop to keep the tarp from moving in the wind to try and keep wind shearing down. Could be they would keep your plastic in place as well....here's a pic of the undercap attached to the inside firring strip and then the outside of the tarp attached to the inside firring strip by the use of another firring strip.... like a tarp and plastic firring strip sandwich.

Try using actual grommets. They're easy to install with the kit.

I haven't used one yet, but they're available at Lowes if you like Chinese stuff. CS Osbourne is american made

Was that pic taken today? Looks like spring time! I have 8 inches of snow (not much, really) but the temps are dropping like a ball bearing!
