Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Why would I be afraid of him? He's a chicken...he weighs what? About 6 lbs? And I weigh...well, never mind about that. Now people are scary - and slugs, slugs are creeeepy.[/QUOTE]
I'm sorry..I misunderstood. I got the impression that you were somehow being forced to live in fear with a monstrous evil bird...

Too much NetFlix for me...

EDIT: What pushed me to believe the above statement was mention of the cock patrolling the yard like a Doberman and tpf09 not being allowed to use her silver bucket.

I thought she might have been in need of a wooden spike and a heavy mallet.....

That's sad that rooster ruined your family's poultry experience. Get rid of that stupid rooster. I had one once. He was mean and had to go in the coop when I  was in the run and vice versa. Never again, Get some nice docile Orpingtons or Australops from someone on this thread. Or maybe some silkies. They make great pets. Its ok to rehome birds or a flock which isn't working for you. I've done it a bunch of times and it is such a relief to stat again with something closer o what you want.
 Best,
 Karen

But I like him. I really do. He's a handful, yes, but the other BO rooster that I had became soup because he tried to kill the other BO rooster, I've never had that problem with Diego after our initial run-in. Yes they have names. They have full run of my yard and garden and it's been peaceful even with three roosters running around crowing their heads off. I understand what you are saying, I do, but this rooster and I started this flock together and he's more than done his job of keeping the hens safe. He avoids other humans except me, he mobs me for treats right along with the others.

No...that would be my big lovable, scatterbrained dork of a husband. 6'4" and he was scared of a rooster. He's also scared of snakes. Screamed like a girl first time he stepped on one in the garden. He's suburban raised, poor thing. I grew up in a more rural setting in a tiny town called Wetumpka, Alabama. Still have family there and in Eclectic (which is not).

I just noticed what time it was. Wow! I got caught up watching the spurs/heat game I'd dvrd earlier. Spurs lost. oO(sigh)

It's known by some of the folks on this thread that I tolerate hateful cocks in my production line, especially if they are out of a particular strain. I make this choice and have no fear of any chicken.

I'm baffled that you would tolerate such an untenable situation, especially with any number of potentially lethal gardening tools at your disposal. Use one of them.

Talking about Heritage LF breeds, breeding stuff, and all sorts of good info. All of the people who post over here know what they're talking about. I just soak it in, most of the time.

But tnspurs's rooster Is not a 'heritage' birds...is it? Unless you class all White Leghorns as heritage.
What is the difference between a heritage breed and the standard?
here is a cut and paste from Bob Blosl when he started this thread maybe it will start answering your question (other BYC members can and might add to my answer):

I just got an email from a person who needs Barred Rock Large Fowl females who has large fowl Cockerels. She also wants the old fashion Rhode Island Red Large Fowl and wants me to help her find a good true to breed line. It made me think how many people out there have or breed old fashion Heritage Large Fowl Chickens?

When I was a little boy growing up in South West Washington State my dad use to take us on drives every Sunday in the country. As we drove by these old farms there were signs outside these farmers fences that would show Registered Polled Herefords, Black Angus, Brown Swiss, Jersey, Holstein and Shorthorn Cattle to just name a few. When I would go to the sale barns I never saw these kinds of cattle just the normal mix match type of cattle or half Guernsey half Herford type caves.

What do you think is a Heritage Style of Poultry like the above cattle breeds I mentioned?

Do any of you have any of these rare breeds?

How many Heat age Large Fowl do you think are left in the Country during the winter months in the breeding Pens? 100 -200- 300 birds per old rare breed?

What has happen to the folks like Grand Ma who use to have a flock of nice Heritage Chickens in the 1950s?

Do you think many want to preserve these old rare breeds?

These are just a few ideas I had today as I was feeding my chickens and after I got this email from one of the members of this board. Look forward to your replies and pictures of old birds. One breed that has made major strides in the past ten years is the Buckeye folks. It proves what they have done in the past five years can be done with any old rare breed.

Perhaps just a less than illustrative example. It's my understanding that 'breeds' are classified, not individual specimens.

No hellbender I don't believe that is the general consensus. I believe it is a matter of semantics which has greatly confused a lot of people. Yes it's true that a breed can be a "heritage breed", it cannot be assumed that as birds of that breed are heritage animals. Look at the RIR for example... The production birds called RIR don't even look like the lines of heritage RIR which have been maintained for generations. They are called the same thing still but they look and function differently. That is just one example.
