"Heritage" RIR vs. Java?

Javas are listed on the USA arc of taste as a unique taste that is in danger of vanishing. The Java tastes a little different then your garden variety poultry.

Javas are better at hustling up their own food in regards to free ranging.

As far as your third question I don't keep track on the individual types eating more or less. I have way too many birds for that, however as mentioned previously Javas seem much better at getting their own food so on the bottom line this would have some effect. How many birds are you looking to keep where the food consumption is an issue?

As far as vigor that depends on the breed but even more important is where you get your birds from.

In regards to predation I lost numerous RIR to hawks, never lost a Java to one. I have lost my share of Javas but almost always it due to a dog chasing the flock and either killing birds on the spot or chasing them far enough away that they become lost and fall victim to whatever. I posted quite a few pictures over the last year or so on BYC with hawks sitting on RIR.
