My local Orscheln and TSC both carry turkeys during chick days, but no heritage breeds. Does anyone know if they'll order them for you (to bypass the 15 minimum) so you can get, say 5 instead?

I think TSC has a minimum purchase amount even for pickup. Thats what I have been told anyway, I've never purchased from them. Did you try googling for a breeder in your area? You could also call your local USDA extension office and see if they know of anyone in your area that may have them.

Yeah unfortunately it looks like the closest hatchery is either several hours away in MO or way off in western Kansas. There is a local place called Capital city poultry that might be selling small quantities, but so far they've only advertised for chicks.

If you can't find any local call me in May, I can sell you 5 and overnight them to you. I've never mailed such a small batch of turkey poults before and I'm sure there is a reason no one else does it but I can't think of why. If you are up for it we can give it a shot.

With that small of a number you will need to provide a heat source for them. Think of a long duration hand warmer - i've seen them around but never used any personally.

We have a local place (Reber Ranch, feed supply store) here in the pacific NW, which wouldn't help you but, they do carry the heritage breeds and there isn't a minimum. They just started selling the heritage breeds April 2nd. I am sure if you went on "craigslist.com" if that exists where you are or googled heritage breed (or the specific breed you want) something should show up. Most small farmers will sell whatever they have extra of around here.

I went to a swap this weekend in Valley Falls (craigslist is great!) and they had Royal Palm chicks so I now have three little babies in a box under the lamp!
