heritage vs mutt, which is more hardy?

Not always. There are multiple roosters usually in each pennof hens at a hatchery, so theoretically a batch of chicks can have full siblings, half siblings and not siblings
Ah, makes sense.

If I were to start my own attempt at crossing, is it better to start with breeding stock vs hatchery stock?

Where does one get breeding stock from?

Gonna toss my hat in:

I believe heritage breeds need more support than the hybrid crosses. Yes there is some genetical shortcomings but if more people begun to breed the heritage stock to their original roots and not the hatchery type we would be able to have more genetic diversity and less chances of genetical collapse which we are already seeing in the Dairy industry with commercial Holsteins.

I do get the appeal of crosses for specific needs and I rather people breed history heritage crosses over the commercial cornish X etc.

Can you give me a list of some heritage crosses?

It'd be something I'd look into.

I'm not too big a fan of the cornish X chicken. I honestly thought of getting a bunch of male Jersey Giants for meat because they're one of the bigger chicken breeds.

Welbar is one cross turn into their own breedline that comes to mind.

I believe the OG was barred rock X rir (or new Hampshire someone gonna need to correct me if wrong) to create faster growing meat stock. The sports from this is where we got Delawares.

Most common crosses is Barred Rock X solid colour due to the sex link nature which is nice if you wish to sell sex pullets and raise the roosters for meat. However both lines need to havd reasonable growth rate for it to work.

Naked necks (breeder stock, not hatcher) can be used to make easier plucking meat stock due to the NN gene being pretty dominant.

Is there a list, or I just go looking around?

I know where are a few chicken associations, but not all of them let you look at the membership list.
Best bet would be to join FB groups, I personally reccomend not only making sure NPIP/AI but try to see their set ups, talk to breeders and try to gleen from hands on knowledge. Don't be afraid to visit a few poultry shows, look up the farm names and see what reviews are out there. Don't always trust FB reviews either its easy to edit those unfortunately.

So, something like barred plymouth x jersery giant? I guess the leghorn (white or brown) would be something to use, too.

I'll have t look around, I'm sure all this cross-breeding info is out there on the internet.
