One of my Leg Horns (Little Jane) has developed a hanging bulging sac coming out of her butt? Reading threads on the subject we tried to drain it with a needle and syringe. My husband Ed said no fluid came out. The other condition if not water would be hernia and hernia is terminal :( Very sad to say the least.
Joined the forum a couple days ago -already learning and dealing with Little Jane's not very hopeful outcome. Loving animals can bring you so much joy as well as break your heart all at once. Cant imagine having to put her down...
Thank you Backyard Chickens for all information available.

Is the sac coming out of her vent, or does she have a swollen red lower abdomen? It does sound like a prolapsed vent if there is red tissue coming out of the vent opening. The large intestines can come out with a really severe prolapse, which decreases the chances of recovery. Keep the red tissue moist with oil or Neosporin Ointment if it is a prolapse so that it does not dry out. Here is a typical prolapsed vent or cloaca, and we await your pictures:

I checked the links suggested but the sac is protruding out of the lower abdomen. More like the photo posted in this thread.

Yesterday we tried the needle/syringe option to no avail.
Our little flock is free to lay as they wish, plenty of space to exercise, good nutrition -as the article above recommends (very good btw), so my question is -Are some breeds more susceptible to these problems, are these chicken breeds genetically engineer?

It would be good to see an actuaal picture if you could get one with a phone. If it is a hernia, and the skin is not broken, I would just keep an eye on it.

Agreed, pictures would be very helpful, also how old is she? Don't want to give you bad advice or send you down the wrong path of information.
