He's a good rooster, but.....

I too have a rooster that has attacked me, as well as, my two boys. He was given several chances, and we tried several different scenarios. Needless to say, he is now headed to freezer camp, as it's just not worth the risk to my children or myself. He goes to camp tomorrow.

Good thread. I have a 14 week old rooster who is just starting to feel his oats, showing more assertiveness with the hens. Today he stood up to me for the first time. He used to run away when I entered the run.

After reading this thread I will be more careful about letting my young granddaughters "play" with the chickens in the run. The girls run around and try to pick up the hens, who do not want to be held. They are loud and move haphazardly. The rooster may try to protect the hens and attack the human girls. I will talk with the granddaughters tomorrow and set rules and boundaries. I would hate to have a bad incident come from a very lovely flock.

Kudos to you for making that decision! In my opinion no animal - even one that we may have come to look on as a pet - is worth risking the safety of a child. Or an adult for that matter. I don't have small kids living here, but I still don't want a mean rooster around. Why? I keep chickens for the enjoyment of it. I don't enjoy having to watch my back every time I go out to the chickens. So, any chicken that takes away that enjoyment doesn't get to stay.

I didn't want to "process" him myself, because he had started out as a pet. I know, strange logic.

However, I didn't want to breed the aggressiveness into future generations. I feel comfortable with my decision, as he went to a family that really has a "need". He will have served a purpose. My coop is already much more peaceful with him gone.

No blame at all for not wanting to process a pet! That's a hard line, and most of us don't want to cross it.

My parents have always raised meat animals. One year, my dad spent a little too much time with a specific lamb, and even..........named it. My mom did go ahead and have it butchered, but whenever lamb was for dinner, my dad just couldn't eat.

You don't have to eat animals like that, but good for not keeping/breeding him! And I hope that family enjoyed dinner

I can totally understand not wanting to process him yourself. I have a couple of hens I feel that way about. Glad you could help a family in need.

Not strange at all! I processed three roosters a few months ago and there was one that I had looked out for since he was low man on the todem pole, so to speak. We had a quiet little talk before the deed was done.

Now to just get rid of this bad boy. Hoping to have time this weekend.
