I'm so heartbroken right now.

I just got back from the ear doctor with my son Evan, he's 9. He's been having speech issues for some time, and we origionally thought it was due to him learning sounds from me (I have an accent). It was confirmed today that he has hearing loss, and it's degenerating further. The cause is unknown still, they wwant to run more tests, and that'll take another 3 months, meanwhile my little boy is sliding further into silence. I feel so awful, I'm a teacher and I feel I should've known. We've been having his hearing checked yearly since he was 3, and each time I've been told he'll grow out of it, now in the last 6 months it's he's losing his hearing, and they'll need to do more tests.

Oh, honey, i'm so sorry to hear that. I hope it's something that can be arrested if not reversed. In the mean time, you may want to start looking into learning ASL.
Hope it turns out better than it looks.

Oh I am so sorry! Hopefully they can treat the problem! I'm sure they can now that you are aware of it! Don't beat yourself up, sometimes we just don't realize there is a problem if it not something we have experienced before!

That's horrible! I'm so sorry for you and your son

Just don't blame yourself, it's not your fault those doctors made the wrong call. It's interesting though; it never occured to me that something like this could happen to someone so young with no apparent reason behind it. Let us know when they find out what's causing it!
But whatever the case, I hope they find out what it is soon and lets hope there's something they can do to stop it from getting any worse!

Sorry you are going thru this. When my middle son was a baby, he was born with ear infections. He was referred to a "specialist"... This dr kept my son on antibiotics and saying he will out grow this. (this whole time his ears were draining some tyoe of stinky puss) We believed him bc hes a dr...Well, for some reason we needed to change pediatricians...1 wk after seeing the new dr., he referred us to a new ENT...She told us just how bad his hearing was..the drs in this office made a special antibiotic for him and has never had another ear infection again...he is still in speech tho...(he is 9)sorry for such the long story, but please have faith...pray...and maybe try a second opinion...Good luck!

that's really very hard to hear, God bless you and your Family, and we all ask God the mighty to heal your Son with his Power, because God is the only one who can fix our problems, say Amen.

Our peditritian is excellent, and the ear specialist is good, but the HMO only has 1 place they can do this kind of testing for 2 counties, and it's a 3 month wait to get in. We've gone there several times, and untill this last one it's been "he'll grow out of his speech problems". So it's been wait 3 months get a test, it comes back inconclusive, wait 3 more get another test, all according to HMO rules, but he's losing hearing faster than we can get him into the next test.
