He's still the boss.

I was just watching a video with chickens, mostly roosters chasing kids. I don't find it funny, I find it dangerous. The adults are laughing at these kids. Do they not understand the damage that can be done? Numerous kids in the video were teasing the birds. Then when the bird hurts the kid, it's time to kill it. I have had kids in with my ducks and chickens/both roosters were present. They never even looked at the kids, they went about their business and any teasing of any animal is not allowed period.
:caf:mad::mad: Some people!!

I don't want an agressive one period. I want a smart one! I want one who will lead the flock away from danger long before it is necessary instead of charging in like an idiot. And yes agression towards me is not an option. I am not a predator. I bring food and do unsavory medical tasks. I lock and open the door. Not to mention iv'e cleaned that dang roo's butt! So being agressive towards the food lady is frowned upon no matter what. I treat my roosters really well and they have one job so expecting a rooster I don't have to worry about and isn't dumb as a rock is not too much to expect. :)
The odd thing about this whole aggressive cock business is, if you've got free range chickens you want the cock to be aggressive. There isn't a lot of point in having a cock that says to a hawk 'hey man, lets sit down and have a talk about this'.
The problem seems to be when the cock is aggressive towards humans.
Well, we are predators too.
What needs to be done is, either keep away from the cock and let him get on with it, or convince the cock you're one of the good guys.
One way is if the hens think you're a good guy.
If you can override his bossing of the hens then that seems to make the cock think.
I've got two lovely cocks here. One runs from his own shadow and the other is currently being taught to fight by his daughter (it's absolutely true). He still isn't up to a predator attack, but at least now he doesn't get bullied by other cocks and the Muscoveys.
I think he'll learn but it takes time.
Regarding children (?) I don't let children near the chickens. I point out that they are not toys and not little pussy cats either.

Ours aren't free range. And I don't allow my child to tease or pick on any of the chickens. I even tell him he can't because it could make them mean. He also helps feed them. Personally I don't have any interest in killing the roosters, but if one tends to be aggressive towards a kind and feeding hand, then he'll have to go. If rehoming isn't possible, then chicken dumplings will be. And once my mom realises that she's got more then the three roosters she believes she's got (since she refuses to listen. . .) there will have to be several to go. . If Red doesn't learn to not be aggressive to humans, then he'll have to be one of the ones to go. . . 20180803_152532.jpg

Boy do I feel ya when it comes to momma’s. Mine is 87 and since the day I was born she’s always known best. Can’t tell her a blesseded’ thing. Even if the can of dog food is really a can of corn. She’ll feed him the corn just to be right!! :lau

I can't agree with you.
A smart rooster will run away when that hawk comes hammering over the field.
A smart rooster knows if he attacks the hawk he'll probably die.
There is no time usually to lead the flock away from danger.
I want a rooster that protects the hens, not one that can do simultaneous equations.

Ours rooster had to go. He developed a habit of attacking my 10 year old daughter. She couldn’t go anywhere near the coop without being attacked. And she had done nothing to incur his wrath. The darn rooster would also sneak up behind me or my husband and ambush us when we tried to feed/water, clean the coop or gather eggs. I didn’t need anyone getting hurt by a jumbo sized Rooster. I would love a nice rooster some day that does his job but leaves us humans alone. I have no problem coexisting as long as the respect is a two way street.

Honestly our rooster had been aggressive and willing to peck hard from the minute we got our chicks. If we reached into the brooder he would peck you hard and try to get a piece of youths nit for the food.

I’ve read a lot of posts here and elsewhere about aggressive cocks and cockerels.
Rather sadly in my opinion, I’ve read a lot of responses along the lines of show him who’s boss.
My view is, if you want to be the boss then you need to be able to do what the boss does.

Can you fertilise the eggs of five hens each day?
Will you be there every day and every night?
Will you escort the hens to and from their nesting and egg laying sites?
What about giving them the best bits of your dinner?
Can you get the hens to follow you?
Are you prepared to die for them?
Of course, you won’t get bored and wander off when they have a long dust bath.
Are you going to dig for treats and give them to the hens?
How about breaking up their fights?
Can you see that hawk in the trees?
What about that weasel over there in the bushes?
Can you get the hens to accept you as boss?

Yes I know you can kill the cock….

He’s still the boss, he’s just the dead boss.
I like this post. I've had hundreds of roosters and only had two human aggressive roosters years ago.

I meant to ask you in some of your other threads - do you have either Penedesencas or Empordanesas in your area?
After over 30 breeds, I've settled on the Black Penedesenca as my favorite breed/variety and the only one I currently raise.

To be honest, I wouldn't know those breeds if I saw them.
I'm not very knowledgeable about breeds.
What I see here are Catalans, which I think are good looking chickens and Black Minorcans.
Here I have French Marans and Bantams (I have no idea what type) and what I think people call mutts.

Penedesencas originated in Penedes and Empordanesas are from Emporda.
They are the only breeds in the world with a white earlobe, yet lay an extremely dark egg (intense reddish maroon).
Are you familiar with Fira del Gall? It is an old foodie festival that got its resurgence when the famous Black Penedesenca was brought back from extinction. The Penedesenca rooster is the star of the show.
It happens the weekend before Christmas in Vilafranca del Penedès.
