Hester

Last year we got eight chicks from my pet chicken. One of them died the night we got her (however sad, that’s a story for another time). Of the remaining seven one was a golden cuckoo maran. She always seemed to behave…differently from the others. As she got older she got BIG. Now she’s far over a year old and no eggs. But she’s also not a rooster. None of her feathers are quite that of a rooster and she’s never crowed. She has a big red comb and wattles, spurs, and is ginormous (but not quite rooster size). She’s pretty protective and is the only one to not run away from our dog or cat lol. We’ve started calling her our hester (hen-rooster) but there’s probably another name for it

Wow that’s odd! Hester is beautiful though.

She most likely has a damaged ovary. When that happens the hen cannot lay eggs, but develops masculine traits like a rooster, such as a giant comb and wattles. She may crow at some point, hard to say.
