Hey all you free-ranging newbies! Come look at this!

Mine do that at night. They get about 2-3 hours. I just don’t want my birds laying all over the place. I open the run door and let them in. One escaped today, little bugger. I put a “nest” in the tractor, and will lure them in. All but two out of 9 are laying, and I have one rooster. I guess I’ll keep them cooped till afternoon. I so enjoyed the coffee/book club in the morning lol!

I get where you're coming from. My area is a hawk breeding ground. This is what I do and it's less expensive. I bought some plastic 1 x 1 garden fencing and some temporary, step on fence posts. I have fenced off an area outside of their covered run and let them "free-range" for an hour or so everyday weather permitting. I sit there with them to challenge any hawks that might want to attempt an attack. Sitting with them gives me a chance to bond with them a little as well. Although it's not true free ranging I have noticed that they all seem calmer and healthier since I started this. Actually after about an hour they are ready to go back into their run and rest up from their adventure. Do what is best for you and your flock and good luck.

I do something similar, every morning and evening I let my chickens while I take care of all the other animals. A good way to tell when predators, especially hawks are around is to listen to the birds, whenever I hear the Blue Jays freaking out I make sure to put my chickens away since that normally means the Cooper hawk is around. Good luck with free-ranging your chickens.

How do you catch them ?
If they don't go in the run voluntarily, I yell, "treats!" Then grab a handful of scratch. Chickens are food centric and even after filling their crops with bugs and grass for an hour they still want treats. They are perpetual 2 year-olds! If you want to try this, start with a small area first then increase the size as they get more accustomed to this routine.

No idea how you guys don't go crazy.
I open the coop in the morning and shut it at night.
I go out if I hear alarm calls, no way I could babysit all day.
Nothing wrong with ya'll that do, im just amazed by ya. :)
My run is large enough but I do this to give my little flock a little extra. I'm retired and I have the time. And it's not crazy, it's actually very relaxing to sit under a shady tree and rest up after a day of gardening, housework and such and hang out with the makers of tasty eggs. I have one that jumps up in my lap and gives me a little snuggle everyday. It really changes your relationship with the little fluff balls.

Truth! These get worms from a solo cup, they have since they were babies solo cups become "chicken whistles" they just have to see a cup and they'll go wherever I lead them.:)
