Hey all

Yeppers you came to the right place for assistance. I'm a new egg too!

edit- forgot to say welcome to your first step to becoming a crazy chicken lady! Also remember to take chicken math seriously, it can be a joy or a bit sad. My first chicken mistake is coming fast as I have 6 roosters to 2 hens presently and if I do not fix that soon it is going to get crazy. So if you decide to order from an internet site order the exact sexes you want

G’Day from down under Catthryn :frow Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

And to BYC!
You can fit quite a few chickens in that space. One thing that is important is to have 1 foot of roost space per full sized hen. Large breeds like 2x4s with he 4inch side up

Most sources say 2 to 4 sq feet per chicken based on coop size. You can go to the smaller sizes since you have a run. 3sq ft. per chicken allows for 10 chickens for a 4x8 coop

Remember though, more chickens equals more work!

Oh am I correct that the coop hasn't been built yet?

Under the Articles section there are loads of examples of great coop designs.
Possibly your son would benefit from reviewing a few of those.

My coop is about 25% ventilation area but hey its hot here, also I don't like being overpowered by the smell of their poo I probably care more about the smells than my chicken do. But my rule of thumb is if their situation with the coop cleanliness or water bowl or whatever is something I wouldn't tolerate for myself then I get to fixing it.

When I started on BYC several years ago, rule of thumb was 4-5 sq. feet per bird in the coop excluding nest boxes and roosts. The outdoor run should allow 10 sq. feet per bird.
Chickens behave best when NOT crowded. If you have periods of severe weather, where birds will stay inside, the extra space will provide a calmer atmosphere. Chickens hate to be crowded and act out in many unhealthy ways
