hey can you use zip ties??????????

The vulture guineas look a little scary to me. But in a beautiful way...

On subject:

If you can use the zip ties for older birds can you use the smaller version for chicks? Sorry, I was wondering the zip tie thing too.

yes but you have to watch that they do not get tight as the chick grows, and replace as they need to be enlarged.

Depending on why your banding chicks there are other options- toe punching or clipping, marker on the back of the neck, wing banding.

We have birds that are toe punched, but then we put zip ties on them when they are grown so that we can identify them from a quick glance. But they are always toe punched so if someone looses a band we can go back to the permanent marking.

Yes the birds are Vulturine Guineas.

spectrumranch, does that mean they are "vultures" and eat carrion. They are so exotic looking, and look very big - are they? You learn something new everyday on BYC forums.

No not Vulture, "Vulturine" they are a wild guinea, so not like a vulture. They are a little taller than a domestic guinea.

We raise them and another wild species- Kenya Crested guineas.

There are more photos of the Vulturines in our- "photos around the ranch" thread in the Other Pets & Livestock section on page 5. I will post photos of the Kenya Crested there now.

I have zip-ties on my girls...DH has a hard time figuring out who is who and some look so much alike. I have to change mine out because they get muddy/dusty and hard to see the colors; otherwise they have worked great!

I know this is an old thread but hopefully someone can answer my question. How do you take the zip ties off when needed?

Just make sure to cut off the excess next to the clasp, that way it will not tighten down any further.

Hopefully you can see the zip ties on their legs in this photo:
