Welcome to BYC. Your mom is lucky to be getting that surprise! We have mainly black sex-links which we buy from 4H kids at their annual poultry sale. They are dependable layers and tolerate the cold very well. I would like to find one of the dual purpose breeds which will lay fairly well and breed true, so that my flock will perpetuate itself. I used to raise Rhode Island Reds as a 4H kid (that was many years ago. Have fun reading up on everything. You will learn a lot here.
