Hello,
I have been lurking and researching for several years. I am disabled but my wife and I both realize that this coming spring is the time to become more self sufficient. So REAL serious about the garden and possibly even Chickens for eggs and the occasional dinner.

Welcome! My advice: start small. How much available space do you have? If you want to PM, I can help you with some handicap accessible gardening ideas. Gardening is my passion, and physical therapy is my occupation. Or you can keep things on a public format.

Chickens make the perfect accompaniment for gardening. However, I suggest that you ditch the mental image of chickens meandering down the paths between neatly manicured garden beds. Yeah, chickens are great. Their poop is wonderful stuff. They eat weeds, they eat next season's weed seeds. They destroy bugs. But, their main mission in life is to plunder and destroy all living green things. So... managing chickens and gardens requires some creativity and time management.

Good to be planning ahead. I did a full year of researching before taking the plunge 4+ years ago. Had chickens as a kid, then in my early home owner years. Thoroughly enjoying them now.

:frow I'm so spoiled I can't eat tomatoes that don't come from my garden . On the other hand I don't eat many eggs but my family does . Nothing beats fresh off the farm . Fresh off your own farm is even better .Good luck .http://www.theeasygarden.com/ This is a good site if you haven't checked it out give it a look

G’Day from down under JT_KROL :frow Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. The Learning Centre is also a great resource and you might find this article interesting Pickin a Chicken

Best wishes and good luck!
