Hey! I'm new, but have been reading the posts for months!

Hello and Welcome from NE OH!

We have 10 Barred Rock Hens, they are a treat and super girls. Enjoy!

Thank you! And I had heard they were very docile and rarely go broody, I hope this is true! I don't need them trying to hatch non-fertile eggs!

Yep, you heard right. Mine have noooo interest at all in being broody after laying for over a year. They also handle the OH winter just fine. Several of the them follow me closely as I work in the garden - "whatcha got for me there, dad?". The two top females go "mouse hunting" with our terrier. I moved a compost pile today and the terrier was sniffing around one side while the mouse tried to sneak off in the other direction, right to "Miss Adventure" and "Miss Mouthy". They went nuts pecking and jumping on it until the terrier figured out what was going on. For 5 minutes the girls were strutting around, I guess bragging about their skills.

Oh yeah, the large brown eggs they lay are AWE-SOME!.... ENJOY!

Thank you so much for all the information! I can't wait til my girls are old enough for egg laying, still about 17 weeks to go! I guess I better enjoy their cuteness while it lasts!

And we haven't had the chance to try it out yet, but it is pretty sturdy. We are thinking about buying the sun shade top for it, then burying wire around to deter my blind rat Terrier from their pen

I hope it works!

After a year and half, they are still cute, just in different ways, like kids as they grow up.

Seeing the the hens do the full-speed "chicken waddle" to come and get treats is hilarous.

Good idea with the sun shade and burying the wire.

With regards to the dog, I wish you luck. It took a little bit of work, but we finally convinced the dog that she should just "deal with it" when it came to the chickens. Now, as you can see from my earlier post, they generally ignore each other.

With the egg laying, are you planning to put a light on a timer in the coop? They need about a dozen hours of light per day to keep production going. The days are getting shorter already!

Thanks b.hromada! And I was planning on the light, but hadn't thought about a timer. Do you think I could get something like that from Petsmart?

Great coop and love the pics of them on your lap. They do grow fast. And, chances are you will end up with more than you originally planned. We have chickens in two places; 5 in the backyard and 10 in the country about 3 miles away with one broody and 5 chicks. I just hatched 6 so they're in the brooder and there's 10 more eggs in the incubator. I don't know how this happened; I just wanted 5 for the backyard!

Anyway, I'm now looking for a 'Little Tykes' playhouse to convert to a coop so I can use my backyard 'tractor' for my chciks. So just give it a while and you'll see what happens....have you heard about 'chicken math' yet?
