I'm in Topsham! Getting my first chickens in the spring! I'd like to get any advice about keeping them warm in the winter. We're thinking insulating would be a good option, but what we're looking at coop wise wouldn't easily allow us to do that.
Hi Topsham,, Congrats on starting up this spring.. We started up last spring.. Hubby built a 10x16 shed/ coop/ pig pen..lol.. NONE of it is insulated.. We sectioned off a 7x10' area for the chickens.. We have 10..We started with 12, 11 layers and 1 roo... It took about 4 months and the roo drove us crazy... He cock-a-doodled-dood constantly.. with windows open and them not too far away and during the day we free ranged them.. He'd be right under the windows.... drove us nuts.. So we got rid of him.. Wished we waited...
We procrastinated getting the run done,, So they were ranging and a hawk got at one of them.. I felt horrible... If Louis was still around that probably wouldn't have happened..
But,,, we finished the run that weekend and now they are safe..
How many are you getting? We are going to try our hand at Meat birds this spring... We will put them in the section that the pigs were in... and keep them separate from the layers...
So far so good though, we get about 6-8 eggs a day... even now.. We leave the flood light on during the day on the inside, about 12 hours..That makes a big difference..
Good luck,,
