hey there, totally new to the site, and chicken raising. my name is Kim, thought i'd copy/paste the sample questions and take a shot at them

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

totally new.. i actually had a fear of birds/chickens before I got mine. my husband (fiance at the time) is friends with someone who likes to get pets and not be able to take care of them. they bought two chicks from the flea market and somehow we got them. we got two of them, a grey one and a brown/black one with feathers on their legs..we named them mork and mindy, we were told the grey one was a hen and the brown/black one was a rooster. the grey one passed a few months ago, had an accident in the kiddie pool in the backyard (oops..we didnt think about it and didnt realize they couldnt swim) about four months after we got them, i felt bad for mork cause he was sad, and hiding..must have saw it and was all traumatized..so the first week after her death i would let him sit on my lap and i'd pet him, and he'd let me..we warmed up to each other. our mistake in how i started warming up to him was to let him in the house for our nightly petting. eventually he decided he wanted to stay inside. now he almost always stays inside, though i try to keep him outside most of the day.. he has his own spot to sleep, and for the most part doesn't really poop all that much everywhere, has a set spot he likes to, and its fairly easy to keep clean. just recently we discovered an egg on the couch.. so apparently my rooster named mork, is really a hen named morkette now. tho im having a hard time with it and keep calling her a him, and ive adopted a morkie as a name..she's gunna get a complex i guess. we thought she stopped laying eggs for a while, and i got smart and started getting books and asking questions on how to raise a chicken..i found out they like to hide them, so i found her hiding spot, which is under the dishwasher/cabinet we have..so im able to collect the eggs daily now. she still loves being petted, and her favorite spot is on my shoulder or lap (shes totally spoiled) we have two dogs, four cats around here inside also who leave her alone, avoid her really..she likes our big dog (who is a pit bull and is a total sweetheart and puts up with morkie trying to land on her to perch) but tolerates the other ones. i know having dogs around chickens can be bad, ive read some books saying dogs will treat them great then suddenly eat them or something, but morkie usually stays pretty high up and doesn't go around them, and im hoping my dogs will keep wide berth from her.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

one, we thought about getting a new one, to try our hand at it, but im still debating about it

(3) What breeds do you have?
i think its a featherleg bantam, not sure what class? havent found too many pictures of her on the internet labeling the specific breed/class etc and the people we got them from have no clue anything about chickens

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

googled for information about chickens and how to raise them

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
reading, spending time with my family, going to the beach

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I recently got married in May to my husband Jesse, before I was a single mom to a 5 year old named stephen. live in florida, have two dogs, four cats, one chicken (did have five cats and a fish too but those recently passed away..old age probably) im a certified medical assistant, but out of a job, was laid off in march, haven't been able to find one, my son is about to start kindergarten, so when he does that im going to be hitting the streets with a vengeance. dont really know much else of what to say..

heres some pictures of me and morkie

this one is of morkie and my most recent edition of the cat family (a mothers day gift) this cat came from the same people who gave us the chickens, they were both on my back as i was laying on the floor, checking each other out

this one is of morkie on our counter, he likes this fake gold bracelet i had laying around and took to carrying it around a lot. put it on him one day, he loved it, he would strut around stretching his neck. i felt like a animal abuser though with it on, and eventually tossed it, he wasn't too happy about that
