HEY! Now that Spring's Here....Suggestion/Warning re: purchasing birds

There is always a chance when you bring new birds. It is a whole lot easier to quarantine day old chicks away from your other birds. If your still worried hatch your own.

The major online hatcheries are probably one of the safer places to buy, but there is still no guarantee. There was a thread here quite recently with contributions from Ideal, perhaps the largest hatchery, certainly one of them. They explained why they do not test for one of the diseases. Made sense to me, but that's an opinion, of course.

Chicks at your local Agway probably came from one of the major hatcheries. I've never been to a show and don't know what tests they offer.

Maybe this site will help a bit. Good starting place anyway.

Good luck!

Still getting complaints about folks bringing home birds and then finding out that they are very ill. Please, please, please smell them (seriously!), inspect them and if you do bring them home, quarantine and observe them.

I totally agree with Cyn, as much as I trust Cyn and know that her birds are about as healthy as birds can get, when I have gotten birds from Cyn, I have quarantined.
First I think putting new birds by themselves helps eleviate stress of being in a new place, stressed birds can of course get ill easier.
Second, quarantine protects the new birds as well as your flock.

I absolutely would expect anyone to quarantine any birds they get from me, 100%. Even though I have had no respiratory illness in my flock, it could be possible that they have just become exposed, but not shown symptoms yet. Then, I would have no idea they were ill. So, please heed the warnings, folks. It's far better to have to cull one bird that you just bought than to risk having to cull or lose birds you really are attached to.
