Hey Patty, Gator, Mike and other mille cochin enthusiasts

Oh, I agree about the type. I've said it myself somewhere in this thread -- I think my birds are awfully pretty, but they could definitely use better type!

The thing to remember is that NO bird is going to be perfect -- and especially in the middle of a project like this, EVERY bird is going to have problems of one sort or other. Now, I love the mille fleur pattern. I've got mille fleur D'Uccles, Speckled Sussex, mille fleur Leghorns, and of course the cochins. You get the picture -- I love that pattern. So, naturally, that's gonna be at the top of my mind when I make breeding selections. OTOH, somebody else may have an overriding love of the cochin body type -- so they might make different breeding choices than I will. There is no such thing as the perfect bird, and beauty is in the eye of the individual breeder!

edited by me -- I now have some eggs from my project birds available for sale, but this really isn't the proper section for advertising them. I've put an ad in the eggs for sale section. Please check there!

Maybe they just mean they have been working on them for a few generations, and they now consider them pure

That's Lynn Charlston -- "Tate" here on BYC.

I dunno how Lynn's birds look as adults, but MFs of all breeds (not just cochins) do change a LOT as they mature. So you really can't accurately judge the adult appearance from the chick!

As for whether somebody calls it a "project" bird or not -- there is no formal definition, so it's up to each individual breeder to decide what label to use. Myself, I've decided it's a project until I can reproduce a good mf pattern with a high degree of consistency. HOW high, I won't know til I get there.

In my breed, you can get a fairly good idea as to what a bird is going to turn out to be as an adult. So I guess the Mille Fleur coloring would not be a good coloration for me to work on with the Langshan.

Tate, can you tell us? Were they imported? Can you tell me how they are different than project birds??

I am NOT trying to start a debate, I'm just REALLY curious as to how they are different, especially if I'm looking around at some largefowl mille fleur cochins...
