Hey Patty, Gator, Mike and other mille cochin enthusiasts

Lynne,
I cannot say, with certainty, which is the best down colour for mille fleur. The only mille fleur coloured birds I'd heard about prior to being in USA were the wheaten (the yellow down) & the brown (the dark looking down).
I've only had direct experience with Orpingtons & Sussex which are both wheaten in UK; so thinking this was the way it was done, I made mine on wheaten.
I have read that the pattern takes best on the brown down. It would not have occurred to me to have made a mille fleur pattern on the chipmunk down; if I were starting again it would be the last I'd choose of the three.
That said it seems that various of the mille fleur coloured bantams, at least in USA, are made on a collection of all three down types & mixtures thereof.
I am fascinated by the photos which are being posted. I think this is not the easiest of colour patterns & sharing info to help draw conclusions from results would be helpful to all.

Twinlights.
Interesting chicks. Thanks.
Does the first chick have mottling showing? When they have as much black as that first chick in the juvenile plumage are they mossy in their adult plumage? Is the second chick a brown chick?
Which chick do you think looks the most promising at this age?

The first chick has no mottling yet. The second and third do.
I think the yellow chicks are showing better mille fleur pattern early on. But, I think the others will improve as they get older.
The first three chicks are brown chicks, and the other three are yellow.
I am just starting with these, they came from Tate. I am trying to learn about them and keep it going.

Thank you so much for taking the time to give a little more insight into the down color. I will certainly be interested to see if the Blonde/Red chick does start to get the deeper tones of mahogany. I'm assuming it must be true as here is a pic of my Roo, Hillary, when a peep.

Twinlights,

I have to agree that I seem to get better coloring from my lighter Blonde/Yellow chicks. It will be interesting to see the progression.

Ok, everyone. I've started a byc page to document our progress in the mille dept. Im hoping to upload photos of our progress.

So far I have:

Lynne
Tate
Josh
Bantyman
AmazonDoc
Cruzin T
Patty
Danny

If anyone else has been breeding milles out there and would like to share your progress with the rest of us, please pm me and I'll add you.

What I need are photos of your birds. Im hosting a gazillion pics right now so if I could get links to your photobucket and byc photos, that would be awesome... not sure how this is going to work yet but I would like to do a bit of documentation on the down color. So, we would need chick and adult shots like Lynne posted for Hillary. It shows what a blonde w/ buff patches will grow into.

I would also like any genetics history, what generation you are on and what, if any, bizaare colors you are getting... as well as any other info that would be useful.

Im thinking this will be an awesome resource for us in the future.

The first pic is from Rosemary's birds and Lynne's https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/17059_rosemarys_chick.jpg She had very light down, almost all yellow. She's growing light buff chest feathers, pretty little one.
This chick is from my flock https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/17059_070409_mfc_chick.jpg Its dark almost a blue. It could be from my blue or black mottled hens. We'll see as it grows.
I enjoy seeing the pics people have at different stages of the chicks growth so will try it too.
This chick came directly from Lynne's eggs https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/17059_mille_roo2_041809.jpg thought it was a little roo from the comb growth...
on 4/18/09 https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/17059_kiko.jpg with lots of white

but you can get the drift. I would like to do a little segment on each of you who are working on the variety ...to show struggles and progress.

Lynne, I kinda took a swing at your story via this thread but, if there is anything to change, please pm me and I will update it.

I already had these photos on my photobucket and am still wondering how I will upload everyone else's w/out hosting the pics myself as I have limited space... Im thinking one could send them to my email, then I can select the pics I want. I'll email back and request the "direct links" to post on here.

I promise I'll contribute. I'm just swamped right now. I'm in the middle of building a new coop amongst other things so as soon as I get a chance I'll join in.

Josh
