Hey everyone!

Im new on this forum and pretty new to owning chickens as well. This forum has been a huuuggee help to me getting started with the girls (and guys), so I figured it’s about time I join.

Few things about myself and my flock. I live in a small, rural town where thankfully there aren’t many limitations on flock sizes. My property is zoned agricultural as well, very thankful for that. I have 2 miniature horses that have quite literally grown up with me, I call them my old geezers now. They live a simple life of eating, lounging, fertilizing the plants, and just looking cute. I have a quarter horse gelding that just about eats my paycheck, but he’s worth it. 2 crazy, always happy pit bulls, who are quickly developing into farm dogs, but I don’t quite trust them around the chickens yet. I have a huge passion animals, and I’m working on my bachelors, hopefully onto vet school in 2 years. I’ve just recently gotten into chickens about 3 months ago.

I bought my coop from an amazing family about 2 hours away that makes coops as a hobby on the side. I was going to build my own, but by the time I totaled up lumber and materials, my cost was halfway to a coop I could just buy built by someone else. It’s on the smaller side, 4 x 8. But I made up for it with the run that I’m just about finished building. I have the girls lots of space, with a 25 x 30 foot run. I have the acreage to free range, but I’m a little nervous about that. We have TONS of foxes, raccoons, weasels, you name it. Just the other night I saw a hawk and an owl watching the girls very closely while I was out feeding. So I wanted to make sure the run was large enough in case free ranging isn’t an option.

Right now I’ve got 16 - that’s the limit unless I get another coop. 2 Americaunas, 2 white brahmas (I think that’s what they’re called?), 2 Isa browns, 2 silver Wyandotte’s, a lavender Orpington, an olive egger, a speckled Sussex, and 5 bantams: Black frizzled Cochin, blue silkie, 2 mottled Cochins, and a .... oh I’m going to butcher this .... Millie fleur d’uccle?? I think? Anywho.... I’m a sucker for color, I went for this more than egg production lol. The bantams are just a week old...I have a gut feeling I’ll end up with almost all Roos from them. One of the americaunas ended up a cockerel. He can stay as long as he plays nice with the ladies and doesn’t attack us humans. As far as the bantams ... I don’t have the heart to rehome them, I may do a bachelor coop if I end up with enough roosters. Otherwise, there’s a huge farm down the road that takes in roosters and unwanted poultry and animals, he’s a very nice man who lives for his pets and takes extremely good care of them.

Sorry for the book!! Glad to be a part of this forum, and thanks for reading!
