Hey there!

Im new to chickens, my boyfriend talked me into it finally (lol) because we go through crazy amounts of eggs. He built us a great coop with a run, we still need to add nesting boxes and we're thinking about covering it at least for winter; but we now have 8 barred rocks unsexed. I'm pretty sure I've picked out a hen or two but one definitely looks like it's trying to crow. My boyfriend named him Luke... Like Cool Hand Luke because he's cocky 🤓. It's difficult to guess the genders for us, some are lightening but have dark feet and a bent waddle, even the one I thought tried to crow has mixed attributes so what can ya do but wait🤷🏻‍♀️.
We started a garden again this year and a compost pile because it really seemed like a waste not to. I had free time from the shut down so I sprouted some seedlings, some worked and some didn't. I ended up getting some more from the nursery and friendly neighbors. I'm going to attempt to preserve some of the extra produce, why not, and I've got a lot of ideas for the future. Chickens are definitely gateway critters. 🐔🍅🌻🌱
Before we embraced home life we did a lot of rustic camping and day hiking. We try to be as self sufficient as possible while keeping the packing list reasonable and not blowing money on gear. The new, to us, activities at home will ultimately decrease our traveling but it's satisfying. Ultra lite homesteading lol.
We've been sent to this forum by Google multiple times for answers to chicken questions so we decided to join. Thanks for reading :) and talk with y'all later.
