Just popped in to say howdy to everyone. I've enjoyed everyone's posts so far and hope to add to the fun occasionally. We've begun our chicken adventures a few months ago with 4 Rhode Island reds (2 roos and 2 hens) and 2 domineckers ( 1 roo and 1 hen) one of which (the hen) our dog killed (we had to adopt him out). We then added 4 araucanas (3 hens and 1 rooster?). More later....

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I'm sorry about the loss of your chicken to your dog. It's always sad to lose one of our flock. Unfortunately dogs and chickens don't usually mix very well. Dogs tend to view chickens either as prey or else as chew toys. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. A rooster can handle 10 hens, less than that and they tend to overbreed and damage them. Looks like you need a lot more hens.

I'm sorry for your loss and hope the rest of your flock does all right. Drumstick diva is right...you're going to need more females for those roos. A good excuse to get more chickens!

    Thanks for joining us!

Thanks for that tip, backyard diva. I thought of taking the three older roosters and putting them in a coop by themselves and putting the 5 hens (2 are laying and three are 16 weeks) and putting them all together in the larger coop. Any thoughts on that?
