Hey, y'all

Thanks so much for the warm welcome.

Yeah, I was going to start with two, but the catalog I have says the minimum order is 25.

I'm kind of enchanted by Buff Orpingtons since I saw one of the member's page in the breed section of this website.

They are beautiful, the golden retriever of chickendom, but I don't want 25 of them and don't have anybody locally who shares my grand obsession with chickens. (I dreamed about chickens last night and that kinda scares me.)

If you have a dog could be a problem, I have to ask does the dog dig. I had to put large wire on the bottoms of my chicken pens to keep out our digger.

Thanks for the tip about the dog. We have found holes in the yard where she's gone after chipmunks. We had a bird nest in an old gas light in the back yard and one day all five babies fell out. She gobbled up two of them as soon as they hit the ground, yuck.

I'm not sure she'd know exactly what to do with a full grown hen. I'm going to try some of the Cesar Milan dog stuff on her when they are chicks, you know, make them part of the "pack". We are planning on keeping them in a moveable coop, but if we can't trust her around them, we may have to go with a fixed coop and wire the bottom. Right now it's all academic.

I will definitely check out Ideal and mypetchicken.com. Somebody else suggested Craigslist, but I haven't had much luck using them for other things in the past.

The planning goes on,

Karen
