Hi! I'm Jen, a homeschooling momma to 4 kids, ranging from 17-9 years old. We also live with 3 dogs: a German Shepherd, a pit bull/hound mix, and a Basset. We are a very full & noisy household in the mountains of Western NC- it's nice to meet you!

Are you new to chickens/when did you first get chickens? I got my first two chicks from a friend in Feb 2024. They were her Cooperative Extension "extras".
How many chickens do you have right now? I have 6 hens and 3 roos.
What breeds do you have? I *believe* I have 1 Black Copper Marans rooster and hen, 1 Speckled Ranger hen, 2 Easter Egger hens, 1 Australop hen, 1 Orpington hen, 1 Barred Plymouth Rock roo, 1 Brown Legbar Bantam roo. Sadly, I lost a Sapphire Splash & Splash Cochin Bantam to a raccoon last month. I'm still trying to nail down some of my birds' breeds- any help would be appreciated :)
What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? Watching them! I've always loved watching wild birds at my feeders; having chickens has been a long-term dream of mine. I also enjoy learning about their different personalities. They are such fun!
Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :DI found BYC while trying to identify my chicks & with a growing flock, I thought being a member of this very cool community was beneficial!

Hiya, Jen, and welcome to BYC! :frow

If you want some help to predator-proof your coop, you could post your set-up and we'll try help, or we also have a Predators and Pets forum you could skim through or post in too. Usually, most varments will return once they get the taste.

BTW, we'd love to see a photo of your chickens too! They sound like a great variety!
